Resultó que la agencia no tenía ningún convenio con la escuela de idiomas. Eran la misma cosa. Mismo dueño, misma empresa. Por supuesto, el negocio estaba era en las clases de francés y aun lo es, según entiendo. Y les ha ido muy bien. Yo había quedado como aplicante principal porque tenía puntos extras por el nivel de inglés. Entonces, en francés tenía que llegar a nivel A2 según el marco común Europeo. Es decir, que según una gente por allá en Europa, yo tenía que poder preguntar lo básico como direcciones, teléfonos, saber presentarme y explicar que hago. En ese momento yo ni siquiera llegaba a nivel 0, si es que existe. Estaba en subcero. Cuando la profesora me preguntó el nombre, en francés por supuesto, yo me quede viéndola con los ojos bien abiertos y pensando para mis adentros “en qué me metí”. Yo en la vida, ni en el colegio, había estudiado francés.
Sin embargo, me motivaba que solo necesitaba 4 meses para poder obtener la certificación de la escuela de nivel A2 y así radicar los papeles. Y le metí la ficha a aprender francés. Pero qué cosa tan difícil y frustrante es aprender ese idioma. Debo decirles que si aprendí algo, por lo menos puedo leerlo y a veces lo entiendo cuando lo escucho. Pero no me pongan a hablar. Tantos fonemas y acentos para una misma letra… quede cansada. A mis compañeros les iba muy bien. Yo no sé si de pronto tengo algún bloqueo con el francés, o si habían estudiando antes y se las estaban dando, pero a mí en serio, me frustró.
Y Por fin listos
Durante los siguientes 4 meses sólo hubo francés en mi vida. El teléfono, el computador, papelitos, 3 días a la semana en clase, que las películas. En fin. Yo sólo esperaba ese maravilloso momento, en que me dijeran que ya estaba lista. En esa época sólo se requería la certificación de la escuela, era un alivio no tener que presentar un examen formal. Mauro, mi esposo, también tenía que estudiar porque el también necesitaba certificación de la escuela, pero sólo A1. O sea, tenía que hacerse entender, pero valía que usara diccionario.
Finalmente después de tantas frustraciones, llegó la certificación. Y ahora sí! Métale candela a eso. Radique esos papeles rapidito que tenemos afán.
La lista de papeles necesarios era larga. Pero con esas ganas que teníamos de irnos seguro los obtendría rapidito.
Pero a uno se le olvida lo burocrático y engorroso que puede ser pedir un papel en Colombia.

A Canada Immigration Story
It turned out that the agency did not have any agreement with the language school. In fact, they were the same thing. Same owner, same company. I was the principal applicant because I had extra points for my English level. Then, I needed to reach a level A2 in French, according to the common European framework. That is to say, that according to some people in Europe, I had to be able to ask the basics like addresses, telephone numbers, know how to introduce myself and explain what I do. At that time I was not even a level 0, if it exists. It was below that. When the teacher asked my name, in French of course, I looked at her with my eyes wide open while I thought, “what did I get myself into”. During my entire life, nor in school or any other place, I had studied French.
However, it motivated me that I only needed 4 months to be able to obtain the certification of the A2 level to be able to file the papers. And I worked very hard in order to learn French. But what a difficult and frustrating thing it is to learn that language. I must tell you that I did learned something, at least I can read it and sometimes I understand it when listen to it. But do not make me talk. So many phonemes and accents for the same letter … I was tired before I started. My classmates were doing very well, though. I do not know if maybe I have a blockage with French, or if they had studied before and not telling me about that, but seriously, it frustrated me.
Ready to Immigrate!
For the next 4 months there was only French in my life. The phone, the computer, post-it all over my house, 3 days a week in class, movies, whatever. I was only waiting for that wonderful moment, when they told me that I was ready. At that time, only the school’s certification was required, it was a relief not having to present a formal test. Mauro, my husband, also had to study because he also needed the school certification, but he only need an A1 level. In other words, he had to make people understand him, but he can use a dictionary.
Finally after so many frustrations, I got the certification. Now hit it on! Submit those papers as soon as you can! We are on a rush!
The list of required papers was extremely long. But as we wanted to leave as soon as we could, I would collect them quickly.
But you just forget how bureaucratic and unwieldy it can be to get a paper in Colombia.
