Cuando uno nunca ha estado a tan bajas temperaturas no es consciente de las calefacciones y mucho menos de que adentro es una cosa, pero afuera es otra.
Mientras caminábamos por el aeropuerto de Calgary para recoger el carro que habíamos rentado, veíamos por la ventana lo mismo que veíamos desde el avión, blanco. Pero estábamos calienticos. Así que pensábamos que tal vez la cosa del frío no era tan grave y que tal vez la gente era un poco exagerada. Si veíamos mucha, mucha nieve y nosotros nunca habíamos visto nieve antes, así que no sabíamos que tan normal era la cantidad que había.
Llegamos al counter del alquiler y después de hacer todos los papeles el señor nos dijo que nos iba a acompañar al carro. El traía puesto un saquito, de esos cuello en V que usamos normalmente en Bogotá. Entonces le dije a Mauro -ves, ese señor mira el saquito que tiene- el frio no es taaaanto yo creo que le dicen eso a uno para que uno venga abrigado. Pero entonces el señor se volteó y se puso una tremenda chaqueta de invierno, de esas de esquiar y ahí fue cuando dije nos vamos a congelar.
Nosotros traíamos unas chaqueticas todas delgaditas, buenas para Tunja quizá. Todo el mundo nos dijo que en Colombia no valía la pena comprar porque no sirven para un culo aquí. (Y es verdad, si viene para acá en invierno no se deje convencer, nada sirve). Menos mal Manu si tenía un chaquetón buenísimo y el sí estaba preparado.
Invierno en Canada: No esta tan frio!
Se abrieron las puertas al parqueadero y les digo que yo pensé que me iba a morir. ¡Que frío tan hijueputa! Yo nunca, nunca había sentido ese frío, ni en el congelador. Es una vaina se le mete a uno en los huesos. Es una sensación que confunde al cerebro: ¿me estoy congelando o me estoy quemando? Como que uno no sabe.
Metimos a los chinos al carro y entre Mauro y yo metimos maletas. Fueron los 10 minutos más largos de todo el viaje. Uno a -21 grados, sin guantes, ni chaqueta, siente que todo se le está congelando. Lo peor es que ni adentro del carro está uno caliente. Por eso lo primero que hay que hacer es prender el carro y la calefacción, no esperar a estar dentro del carro para hacer eso (¡Lección 1: aprendida!).
Ese día, 20 de diciembre, había caído una de las nevadas más tremendas de los últimos 20 años. Preciso. Aunque el cielo estaba azul y el sol brillaba fuerte parecía de mentiras porque había tanta nieve que nada se calentaba. La idea era ir a comprar las chaquetas ese mismo día, pero salimos muy tarde, estábamos muy cansados y ya el almacén al que planeábamos ir estaba cerrando. ¡Pero tranquilos al siguiente día ya teníamos nuestras chaquetas y botas!
Disfrutando la nieve
¡El primer encuentro con la nieve fue muy divertido! Nos gozamos ese momento al máximo!. Manuelito hizo por fin su angelito de nieve y se lanzó en trineo, una delicia. Ver los árboles blancos, con las ramas congeladas es un espectáculo único, el paisaje es indudablemente hermoso.
Pero después de un mes, de ver caer nieve, de ver sólo blanco y de aguantar frío, ya empieza a saber a cacho. Así como el audio del argentino si lo han oído alguna vez, jajaja, aunque a él le fue como peor. Nieve, nieve, nieve por todos lados, y ¿cuándo va a parar? ¡El año nuevo nos tocó a -41 grados! Eso es un frío el macho. Es que uno un segundo afuera ya se congelo. Y es que el frío es tanto que cuando uno respira se le congelan los pelitos de la nariz. Si respira profundo, siente uno como los pulmones se enfrían. Es una sensación que asusta porque empieza uno a toser inmediatamente y sabe uno que los pulmoncitos están dándole a toda para no congelarse también.
Todo el mundo nos decía que había sido el invierno más largo que habían tenido en los últimos 20 años. ¡Y seguro si porque era abril y seguía nevando!
En serio el invierno dura tanto?
La última nevada cayó el 26 de abril. Cuando ya creíamos que no íbamos a ver más nieve. Ese invierno duro como 6 meses. Juemadre, yo que soy bien mala para el frio y me tocó este helaje tan bravo. Claro está, que es que aquí el frío se vive diferente. Aquí hay calefacción en todas partes entonces mientras uno esté adentro no hace frío. Afuera es otra cosa, sólo para que sepan todo se enfría más rápido afuera que en la nevera. Lo bueno es que si el congelador se llenó, ahí está la mesita del balcón.
Ahora ya llevamos 2 inviernos. Este año no fue tan largo ni tan nevado, pero hizo mucho frio, tanto que ni las calefacciones lograban dar suficiente calor. Según todo el mundo hacia como 20 años no había un invierno tan frío…. jodidos! Primero que el más largo y nevado y ahora que el más frío. Pero si, tuvimos 2 alertas de frío extremo y estuvimos 3 semanas alcanzando -45 grados. El año pasado fue como un día o dos así de frío.
Pero bueno, todo es costumbre. Ya este año caímos en cuenta que la nevera es más caliente que la calle. A 1 grado ya decimos -!Siii, calorcito!-, a 5 grados nos ponemos solo una chaqueta y 14 grados salimos en pantaloneta y chanclas como cualquier canadiense.
Días cortos, Noches largas
Lo otro del invierno es la falta de sol. No es que no salga el sol, porque casi siempre está soleado, pero el día es muy corto. Amanece como a las 9 y a las 4 ya está oscureciendo. Eso pega duro sobre todo los primeros días que uno cree que está todavía de madrugada, pero no, ya son las 10. Uno alcanza a desestabilizarse, a sentirse enfermo y como triste. Pero a eso también uno se acostumbra. Como a la parte de la descongelada de la nieve al día siguiente de una nevada. Es una vaina hartísima porque es un solo barrial, la linda y blanca nieve se vuelve de un café inmundo y hay charcos por todas partes.
Ahora hablemos del hielo, o Black Ice. Y se llama asi porque se camufla con el pavimento o los andenes y uno no lo ve. Entonces cuando menos piensas estas en el piso, patas arriba con un dolor el verraco (en el ego y en el culo) y si estas de buenas nadie está por ahí para reírse de ti. Dicen que si uno se cae en el primer invierno ya uno no se devuelve. Yo estoy super confirmada porque me caí como 7 veces. Y en la vía es mas peligroso, porque los carros se deslizan y puede uno estrellarse muy, pero muy fácil.
Aprendiendo a vivir con el frío
Y hablando de carros, hay que cambiarle las llantas todos los inviernos, por unas de invierno obviamente. También el líquido para parabrisas, porque ojo, ¡el agua se congela en las mangueras y se revientan! Así que aquí el líquido para el parabrisas es una necesidad. De 2 a 3 tarros por semana mientras dura el invierno, porque además se usa todo el tiempo.
También es bueno comprar una extensión, para conectar el carro. Si. El carro se conecta en las noches, para que el “banco” no se enfrié y prenda en la mañana. Y ojalá consiga uno con encendido remoto. Asi, lo puede prender sin salir de su casa y cuando se monte al carro, ya este calientico. Hay que lavarlo seguido porque como se la pasan echando sal y grava (esas piedritas chiquitas como de pecera) para que la nieve se descongele rápido, entonces los carros se oxidan mucho. Y si estuvo de buenas, ninguna piedrita le rompió el panorámico. Pero tranquilo, que aquí pocos son los carros que están invictos.
En Canadá, todo el mundo se quita los zapatos a la entrada. Básicamente porque de la calle llegan emparamados por la nieve. Pero es lo mismo en cualquier estación del año. Lo que nos dijeron, es que es una ofensa para un canadiense entrar a su casa con zapatos.
Es algo muy cultural y a mí me parece chévere, no mete uno tanto mugre a la casa. También porque los zapatos se llenan de grava y no es chévere barrer esas piedritas todo el día. Se acostumbrarán a ver unas alfombras grandes a las entradas de las casas y además un closet, para colgar las chaquetotas. Entonces entrando o saliendo de una visita donde sus amigos, fácilmente se puede demorar unos 10 minutos más mientras se quita el andamiaje, o sea la chaqueta de invierno, el hoodie, el gorro, los guantes, y las botas. Y por favor prepárese a comprar medias seguido porque como uno siempre está en medias se rompen todo el tiempo.
En fin, así es Alberta. Menos mal en Calgary el Chinook ayuda. (Un viento cálido que viene no se dónde, pero que hasta se puede ver y trae calorcito de cuando en vez para contrarrestar el frio). Hay otros lugares mucho más fríos que Calgary. Otros seguro no tanto, pero todo eso hace parte de la aventura y de las cosas que hay que tener en cuenta cuando uno escoge a que ciudad quiere llegar.

Winter in Canada
When you’ve never been at such cold weather you’re not aware of the heating systems or that inside its one thing, but outside is another.
As we walked through Calgary airport, to pick up the car we had rented, we could see out the window the same thing we saw from the plane, white. But we were warm. So we thought that maybe the cold wasn’t that bad and maybe people were a little exaggerated. Yes, we saw a lot of snow but we had never seen snow before, so we didn’t know what was normal and what wasn’t.
We arrived at the car rental counter, and after doing all the paperwork the guy was kind enough to show us where the car was. He was wearing a V-neck sweater like the ones we normally use in Bogota. So I told Mauro – see? look the kind of jersey the guy is wearing- the cold isn’t that bad! I think maybe people were just a little exaggerated. But then the guy turned around and put on a tremendous winter jacket, one of those you see people wear to ski. And that’s when I realize we were going to freeze.
We were wearing some light jackets. Good for spring maybe, because everyone told us that in Colombia it wasn’t worth buying winter jackets because they’re not good enough for Canadas’ cold weather. (And it is true, if you ever come to Canada on winter, don’t let anyone convinced you, nothing works.) Good thing Manu had a great jacket and he was ready for what was coming.
Winter in Canada: Not that cold.
The doors to the parking lot opened and let me tell you, I thought I was going to die. What was that fucking cold? I’ve never, ever felt that cold, not even in the freezer. It got into your bones, it’s a feeling that confuses the brain: am I freezing or am I burning? Like you don’t know. So we put the kids in the car and Mauro and I packed up. By all means., it was the longest 10 minutes of the whole trip. Because, At -21 degrees, no gloves and no jacket, you feel that everything is freezing. The worst thing is that even inside the car is still cold. So, that’s why the first thing to do is to turn on the car and the heating. Do not wait until you are inside the car to do that (Lesson 1: learned!).
That day, December 20, had fallen one of the worst snowfalls of the last 20 years. Of Course!! Although the sky was blue and the sun was shining, it seemed to be fake because there was so much snow that nothing was getting warm. The idea was to go buy the jackets that same day. But we arrived very late, we were very tired and the store we had planned to go, was already closing. But don’t worry! the next day we got our jackets and boots!
Enjoying Winter in Canada
The first time in the snow was a lot of fun! We surely enjoyed that moment to the fullest!. Manuelito finally made his little snow angel and jumped on a sled, a delight. Seeing the white trees, with frozen branches is a unique spectacle, the scenery is undoubtedly beautiful.
But after a month, of watching the snow fall, seeing only white and being cold, you start to get annoyed… As the Argentine’s audio, if you’ve ever heard it, hahaha, although I think he got it worst. Snow, snow, snow everywhere, and when is it going to stop? The New Year’s Eve hit us at -41 degrees! That’s fucking cold. In just one second outside you will freeze. The cold is so much that when you breathe your nose hairs freeze. If you breathe deep you can feel the cold getting into the lungs. It’s a scary feeling because you start coughing immediately and you know that your lungs are giving it all not to freeze as well.
Everyone was telling us it had been the longest winter they’d had in the last 20 years. And sure it was because it was April and it was still snowing!
Winter in Canada: Is that really that long?
The last snowfall was on April 26th when we already thought we weren’t going to see any more snow. That winter last like 6 months. I’m very bad with cold and I willingly came to this freezing city!. Of course, here you experience the cold differently because there is heating everywhere. Then as long as you are inside you are very warm. Outside it’s another thing, just so you know everything cools down outside faster than in the fridge. However, the good thing is that if the freezer filled up, there’s the balcony’s table.
We have now been through 2 winters. This year was not so long or so snowy, but it was very cold. So much that even the heating couldn’t give enough heat. To point out, according to everyone about 20 years, there was no such cold winter…. Fuck! First than the longest and snowy and now that the coldest. But yes, we had 2 extreme cold alerts and we reach -45 degrees during 3 weeks. Last year was like a day or two.
But well, like everything you just need to get used to. This year we realize that the fridge is hotter than the street. Also that at 1 degree we already say -! Yes, its hot!-, at 5 degrees we put on just one jacket and 14 degrees we go out in shorts and flip flops like any Canadian.
Winter in Canada: Long nights, short days.
The other thing in winter is the lack of sun. Not that the sun doesn’t come up, because it’s almost always sunny, but the day is very short. Sunrise It’s about 9 o’clock and sunset at 4 o’clock. That hits hard especially the first few days when you think is still overnight, but no, it’s already 10 o’clock. That makes you feel sick and kind of sad. But you get used to that, too. And also, to the part when the snow melt. The next day of a snowfall is just mud all over the place. The cute white snow turns to a filthy brownish and there are puddles everywhere.
Now let’s talk about ice, or Black Ice. Called that way because it camouflages with the pavement or the sidewalks and you don’t see it. Then when you least think you’re on the floor, upside down in a lot of pain (in the ego and in your ass) and you’re praying that nobody is out there to laugh at you. They say that if one falls in the first winter, you will stay in Canada forever. Well, I fell like 7 times… And on the track it’s more dangerous, because cars slide and you can crash very, very easy.
Winter in Canada: learning to live with the cold
And speaking of cars, you must change the tires every winter, for some winter ones obviously. Also the windshield fluid in important, because the water freezes in the hoses and bursts! So here the liquid for the windshield is a necessity, 2 to 3 jars per week for the duration of the winter because it is also used all the time.
It’s also good to buy an extension, to connect the car. Yes. You connect the car at night so that the “bank” do not freeze and it will start in the morning. Try to get one with remote start. That way you can start it without leaving the house and when you get into the car, it’s already warm. It must be washed often because salt and gravel are pour in the streets so that the snow defrosts quickly, then the cars rust a lot. And if you are in luck, no pebble will break the windshield.
In Canada, everyone takes off their shoes at the entrance, basically because they are all snowy and dirty. But it’s the same in any season of the year because it’s an offence for a Canadian to come into his house with shoes. It’s a very cultural thing and it seems cool to me, it doesn’t get much dirt into the house. Also because the shoes are filled with gravel and it is not cool to sweep those pebbles all day. You will get used to seeing large carpets at the entrances of the houses and also a closet, to hang the jackets. Then entering or leaving from your friend’s house, can easily take about 10 minutes longer while removing the scaffolding, i.e. the winter jacket, the hoodie, the hat, the gloves, and the boots.
Anyway, that’s Alberta. The good thing in Calgary is that the Chinook helps. (A warm wind that comes I don’t know from where, but it can even be seen and brings warmth from time to time to counteract the cold). There are other places much colder than Calgary. Others for sure not so much, but all of that is part of the adventure and the things to keep in mind when you’re choosing which city you want to go to.
